Henderson recreation center to host event
The Silver Springs Recreation Center will host its second annual block party 6-9 p.m. Friday at the center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway.
The free event is sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.
The event will feature dancing, a variety of carnival games, an inflatable bounce, sack races, three-legged races, volleyball and a bungee run.
Participants are invited to bring picnic dinners. The recreation center will provide free popcorn, cotton candy and flavored ice treats. For more information, call 435-3814.
NLV residents can talk to councilman
North Las Vegas Councilman John Rhodes will hold a town meeting 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at Reynaldo L. Martinez Elementary School, 350 E. Judson Ave.

Auxiliary schedules annual fashion show
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary will hold its fourth annual luncheon and Fashion Shop by Dillard's at 11 a.m Tuesday at the Monte Carlo.
Cost is $40. The luncheon and fashion show will also feature a silent auction including two museum archival lithographs by artist Rick Harlow, Cartier, Movado and the Las Vegas Philharmonic.
The Women's Auxiliary will use proceeds to furnish "Silvercrest Residence" for low income seniors. For more information, call 870-4430.
Jubilee 2000
The annual "Jubilee 2000" bazaar will take place 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 1840 N. Bruce St.
Election lecture
Ken Rudin, political editor for National Public Radio and columnist, will lecture on "Election 2000: The Presidency and the Congress" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Koch Auditorium of the Classroom Building Complex at UNLV. The lecture is free. For more information, call 895-3401.
Rummage sale

Festival of Fire
The Festival of Fire is scheduled 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Clark County firefighter Ben Rupert will perform a Northern Indian Fancy War Dance to help raise money for the Clark County Firefighters Burn Fund. For more information, call 455-7338.
Mini Olympics
Brown's Gymnastics Las Vegas will host the Mini Olympics 1-6 p.m. Saturday at 4544-C W. Russell Road. This free event is open to the public. It is intended for families with children ages 18 months and up. For more information, call 257-9009.
Men over 40 are invited to participate
Free prostate screenings are being offered 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at two locations: the radiation oncology office of the Sunrise Diagnostic Center, next to Sunrise Hospital, 3006 Maryland Parkway, Suite 100, and the radiation oncology office at MountainView Hospital, 3150 N. Tenaya Way, Suite 160.
Men should be 40 or older and should not have had a prostate exam within the last year. Appointments are required. Call 731-8788.
Elder care class
The Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence will offer a free class called Elder Care and You 6:30 p.m. Thursday at 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite 330. For more information, call 914-7060.
Candlelight vigil
The Southern Nevada Mental Health Coalition will hold a candlelight vigil 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in front of the Sawyer State Office Building at Washington Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard to honor those who live with mental illness. For more information, call 968-4018.
