Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000 | 10:22 a.m.

Two Las Vegas educators have been recognized with awards for their efforts to improve the community.

Dave Hickey will receive the Arts in Education award at the Governor's Awards in the Arts and Humanities ceremony in November. He is being recognized for artistic achievement and support of the arts in Nevada. Hickey is an English instructor at UNLV.

Elizabeth Miller, a teacher at New Horizons Academy, was recently named one of the country's 100 most outstanding educators.

Miller was recognized by ReliaStar and Northern Life Insurance's "Education's Unsung Heroes" program for utilizing innovative teaching methods and has received a $2,000 grant. She teaches her elementary students about economics and the business world using a project called "Minding Our Own Business."

Students run their own businesses that accept a special school currency. As budding entrepreneurs, the children design their own stores, apply for licenses and sell items to others in the school.
