Rebel golf team falters

Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000 | 11:13 a.m.

The UNLV golf team was in ninth place at The Preview By Ping and Golfweek as second-round play was suspended due to inclement weather Monday at the Duke University Golf Club.

The Rebels finished first-round play in fifth place with a 5-over par team round and just six strokes behind Georgia. However, with six holes of the second round completed, UNLV slipped to 13-over for the tourney and ninth place in the team standings. At 1-over par, Georgia led the team competition with a 3-stroke edge over Texas.

Individually for UNLV, freshman James Oh fired a 3-under-par 69 in the first round and was in third place, two shots behind Auburn's Kevin Haefner. Two bogies in Round 2 dropped him to 1-under and a tie for sixth place.

The Rebels' Scott Lander finished the opening round at 3-over and was even-par through seven holes in the second round and tied for 29th. Calvin Kupeyan trailed Lander by a stroke and was tied for 36th overall.

The tournament has been shortened to 36 holes.
