Pros and cons of Greenbrier casino to debate their views Oct. 3
Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000 | 9:23 a.m.
Metro News Talkline in Morgantown and its affiliate WRON-AM in Ronceverte, Greenbrier County, will broadcast a town hall meeting Oct. 3, said Mike Kidd, WRON general manager.
Greenbrier County residents will vote in a referendum Nov. 7 whether to allow The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs to operate a casino for its guests. The Legislature this year authorized the vote.
Ted Kleisner, president of The Greenbrier, will argue the resort's case for the casino and former Rep. Cleve Benedict, R-W.Va., will represent opponents.
Anti-gambling forces sought three debates, but Kleisner refused, said Mike Queen, a consultant for casino opponents.
Queen said he asked the Greenbrier County Citizens Alliance, a group that backs the proposed casino, to participate.
"We will have two debates even if we have to debate an empty chair," he said.
The Greenbrier did not return phone calls seeking comment.
The town hall meeting will air between 10 a.m. and noon. It is to be staged at the Greenbrier Valley Theater in Lewisburg.
