Voters to be wooed during UNLV event
MTV brings its Choose or Lose team to UNLV Friday in an effort to register young voters.
A voter registration tent will be set up on campus in which volunteers will sign up students from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Other events will take place during the day, and several bands, including punk rock group Pennywise, will perform at 6 p.m. Dozens of local politicians also will attend in the evening.
The event is free and open to the public.
Punt, pass, kick competition set
The final qualifying event for the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick competition is coming up 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Viator School, 4246 South Eastern Ave.
Children ages 8-15 are eligible to participate in the competition and only need to get through one local qualifier in order to move on to the sectional competition during the UNLV-Wyoming football game on Oct. 21 at Sam Boyd Stadium.
Boys and girls compete in separate divisions and in four different age divisions, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15 year-olds.

Motorcycle Association Rally
The Nevada State Christian Motorcycle Association Rally will be Oct. 6-8. Pre-register by Sept. 29 to One Way Rider, P.O. Box 42372, Las Vegas, NV 89116. Cost is $12.50 for pre-registration or $15 registration at the door. For more information call Van at 432-6095.
Grant to help build new center
A $5.8 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation will go toward building a new home for the 35,000 members of the Boulder Dam Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.
The 36,000-square-foot facility will be built at the northeast corner of Warm Springs and Paradise roads and is expected to be complete by February 2002. It will include a Scout store/trading post, conference center space and office space for council staff.
Its current center, built in 1966, is located at 1135 University Road near UNLV. Site preparation, landscaping and other costs will be payed for through fund-raising efforts by the Boulder Dam Area Council.
$224,000 raised for public schools
The Clark County Public Education Foundation's Take Stock in Children campaign raised more than $225,000 this year for locals schools.
The funds will be used to improve academic achievement, support system reform and provide teachers with updated learning tools, as well as going towards a variety of other education programs in the county.
Las Vegas wins in three categories
The Las Vegas Planning and Development Department recently won three DeBoer Excellence in Planning Awards from the Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association.
The Las Vegas 2020 Master Plan won for Outstanding Public Outreach, and the Downtown Centennial Plan and new subdivision rules were also honored.
Immunizations
Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 15 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, Sept. 27 through Oct. 3:
DISTRICT HEALTH CENTER: 625 Shadow Lane, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
HENDERSON PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 129 W. Lake Mead Drive, Building A, Suite 10, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
EAST LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
NORTH LAS VEGAS FAMILY HEALTH CENTER: 2225 Civic Center Drive, Suite 240C, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
FREMONT MEDICAL CLINIC: 4880 S. Wynn Road, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Immunizations free to anyone who walks in.
RAINBOW LIBRARY: 3150 N. Buffalo Drive, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 3.
CAMBRIDGE COMMUNITY OUTREACH CENTER CLINIC: 3827 S. Maryland Parkway, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Oct. 3.
