Monday, Sept. 25, 2000 | 4:37 a.m.
There were few immediate details of the afternoon incident on the Black Rock Desert 120 miles north of Reno.
KOLO-TV reported the two suffered second- and third-degree burns over 90 percent of their bodies after they jumped into the spring to retrieve the dog.
Despite their efforts, the dog died in the spring's scalding water. It was unclear how the dog wound up in the spring.
The two people were initially flown to Washoe Medical Center in Reno, then flown to a Las Vegas hospital burn center.
The Black Rock Desert is home of the annual Burning Man counterculture festival that draws thousands of people from across the country.
