David Keith Burnam of Stateline, Nev., was booked Thursday into the El Dorado County Jail on a felony hit-and-run charge.
The body of Guia Orbeta, 66, of Daly City, Calif., was found Sept. 10 on a sidewalk beside U.S. Highway 50 just west of the intersection with Pioneer Trail.
Police praised employees at a Carson City, Nev., body shop for leading them to the suspect.
The employees became suspicious Wednesday when the suspect asked them to keep confidential the front-end repairs to his Jeep Cherokee.
They reported him to police and detectives tracked the suspect down through the license plate.
Parts from a newer model Jeep Cherokee littered the street beside her body.
Orbeta was reported missing by family members after she apparently disappeared from a Stateline casino. Her body was discovered about a half-mile from the casino where she was last seen.
