Washington roundup: Panel backs Bryan’s bid for more highway safety funds

WASHINGTON -- The Senate Commerce Committee this week approved Sen. Richard Bryan's amendment to add $18 million to the budget of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Bryan, D-Nev., said the NHTSA has been underfunded for years, while the number of cars on the highways has skyrocketed. The agency needs more money to do a better job of acting as safety watchdog.

At a committee hearing this month on Firestone tire problems, Bryan asked NHTSA officials if they needed more money to do a better job of watching over vehicular safety threats.

In other action:

Some have criticized the bill for ignoring established procedures for creating a memorial.

"Congress ought not wreck the process by hastily blessing an ill-conceived and ill-timed bill," a Washington Post editorial said.
