LV trash company lays off 35 workers
Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 | 11:18 a.m.
The company that holds trash-removal franchises for Clark County, Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas has laid off 35 trash haulers, recycling workers and plant operators.
A spokeswoman for Republic Services of Southern Nevada, formerly known as Silver State Disposal Inc., said the company has begun realizing the economies of a new single-shift schedule and the operation of two new transfer stations in Henderson and Sloan.
Spokeswoman Lee Haney said today it has taken several weeks for the company to adjust to the new schedule necessitated by the opening of the transfer stations and the change from a a two-shift schedule to a single shift, which began July 3. Haney said trash volume also declines in the fall.
Some workers said the layoffs were a result of cost cuts resulting from high amounts of overtime the company was paying, particularly with the rapid growth being experienced in the coverage area.
Republic, which serves about 300,000 residential customers in the Las Vegas area, acknowledged that more overtime has been paid recently during the reorganization, but Haney did not have an exact figure.
