Letter: Prescription plans imperiled

Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 | 9:25 a.m.

America's seniors deserve the same choice of good private prescription coverage that members of Congress and their families have, not a one-size-fits-all government plan.

A big government prescription drug plan would threaten the private coverage of millions of seniors, effectively forcing many seniors out of their private prescription drug coverage.

Congress shouldn't add layers of bureaucrats and bureaucracy, imposing new rules, regulations and restrictions that could interfere with the availability of medicines and limit what doctors can prescribe. Look what happened to our nursing homes and hospital care! Where will the money come from in 2013 when Medicare goes broke?

We seniors better think about our kids and grandkids being able to support their families, and you younger people better think about the increases in Medicare taxes you'll be paying in the future. Remember, the surpluses are only projected surpluses and the economy is starting to slow down. The good times don't last forever.
