Joe Delaney remembers 1961: Bennett was here before he lost his heart

Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 | 9:09 a.m.

Tony Bennett was a major recording star when he played the Dunes in 1961. "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," still his signature song nearly 40 years later, was a year in the future. Bennett's career had still another renaissance via MTV in the 1990s plus a succession of annual tribute albums -- to Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington, that each won Grammy Awards. Ralph Sharon continues as Bennett's conductor and arranger. Ford & Reynolds was just another comedy duo, short-lived, as were the dancing Earl Twins. Bill Reddie left bandleading for a very successful career as a composer and arranger.
