CARSON CITY -- Sixteen acres of surplus state property between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard South near West Sunset Road will be put up for bid.
The property, adjacent to land owned by Howard Hughes Properties and the Vacation Village hotel-casino, features 800 feet fronting the Strip. It has been appraised several times, with the value ranging from $4.8 million to $9.6 million.
The state Transportation Board authorized the bidding Wednesday.
If the bidding process is not successful, the department will try to negotiate a land exchange with Clark County for property needed for a new Nevada Highway Patrol headquarters in Southern Nevada.
This issue has been discussed at previous meetings of the Transportation Board.
Gov. Kenny Guinn told the board Wednesday he is upset about the delays in selling the acreage. "Why is this taking so long?" he asked. "The longer we take, the higher the cost of the highway patrol building."
But department officials said certain rules and procedures must be followed in the bidding process.
