North Las Vegas briefs for September 21, 2000

Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000 | 11:27 a.m.

Agreement signed for city project

North Las Vegas has approved a landscaping project on Las Vegas Boulevard and Civic Center Drive, which when completed will look like the entry into Summerlin.

The city Wednesday signed an agreement for the project with Poggemeyer Design Group for $157,700, paid for by state transportation funds and city street funds.

The landscaping will be along Las Vegas Boulevard, between Lake Mead Boulevard and Carey Avenue, and along Civic Center Drive, between Las Vegas Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue.

The project should be completed by October 2001.

Police to file three applications

The North Las Vegas Police Department has been given the go-ahead by the City Council to apply for three grants. The first, a $30,000, one-time grant through the Bureau of Justice Assistance, is for a professional grant researcher and writer.

The second and third grants, through the Nevada Department of Human Resources, is for an outreach program targeting tobacco use by juveniles for $100,000 and a program dealing with alcohol and drugs for $250,000. The staff of Eclipse Productions -- which produces "North Las Vegas Now!" will develop the programming and present it during episodes of the television show.

Rights-of-way to be spruced up

Developers in North Las Vegas will now be required to plant 5 feet of perimeter landscaping on each side of residential streets.

The ordinance, designed to spruce up bare block walls, affects all rights-of-way less than 60 feet wide.

Ordinances offer second provider

Residents looking for a choice of ambulance providers will soon have their wish.

On Wednesday the City Council introduced three ordinances dealing with a second ambulance provider, American Medical Response.

Once the items are voted on at the council's Oct. 4 meeting, the council will then vote on a franchise and lease agreement for American Medical Response. AMR will compete with Southwest Ambulance for nonemergency and special-event service in North Las Vegas and Clark County. Southwest Ambulance will remain the city's emergency response provider.
