County committee recommends casino at former dog track

Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000 | 10:02 a.m.

The county board's finance committee voted 5-0 Wednesday to recommend Outagamie County enter into a contract with the Lac du Flambeau band of Lake Superior Chippewa for the casino.

But that approval is contingent on the tribe partially waiving its sovereign rights on the 15-acre parcel where the casino would sit.

The proposed contract will be considered by the county board Tuesday.

At least a third of the board's 39 members will travel to the tribe's Lake of the Torches casino in northern Wisconsin on Friday to tour the facility and meet tribal officials.

The day-long trip will include a closed-door meeting between Kaukauna, county and tribal officials to discuss the proposed contract.

Kaukauna Mayor John Lambie said Tuesday's announcement that the tribe and officials in LaFayette County have reached an intergovernmental agreement for a casino in that county will not stop negotiations for the dog track.

Before a casino could open at the former greyhound race track, which is not on the Lac du Flambeau's reservation, approval is needed from the county board, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs and Gov. Tommy Thompson.
