Democrats: Party not backing down in Nevada

Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000 | 1:35 a.m.

Sen. Harry Reid and his Democratic, would-be colleague, Ed Bernstein, said during the vice president's visit that the national party isn't backing down from Nevada.

National polls still show Republican nominee George W. Bush nearly even with Al Gore in the state. And Bernstein has been bouyed by polls showing him about 10 points behind his rival, former Rep. John Ensign. That is half the lead Ensign had a month ago.

Reid hinted that the Republicans could face a tough advertising campaign that focuses on the issue of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump.

"George W. should prepare for a nuclear waste ad," Reid said.

"George W. Bush is going to lose Nevada," he said.

Bernstein said he can overcome Ensign's lead by focusing on issues including a woman's right to choose on abortion and health care reform.

"The issues in Nevada are the same as issues around the country," Bernstein said.
