Cutbacks ordered by LV manufactured housing seller
Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000 | 10:34 a.m.
A manufactured housing builder plans to close 41 of its 290 retail centers and several of its 56 factories nationwide because of sluggish sales, but hasn't yet determined whether it will close any of its three sales centers in Las Vegas.
Champion Enterprises Inc. of Auburn Hills, Mich., whose subsidiaries operate the Las Vegas sales centers as Tom Terry Homes and Homes America, said the closures will likely be in the Southeast and Northwest part of the country, where demand for manufactured housing is soft.
The Las Vegas outlets have about 20 employees. There aren't any factories in Las Vegas.
Libby Argiri, Champion's spokeswoman, said the manufactured home industry has been hit by slow consumer demand, a growing number of retailers and an inventory surplus.
