Residents object to Horizon Ridge project

Friday, Sept. 15, 2000 | 10:46 a.m.

Dozens of Henderson residents have faxed city leaders their objections to a proposed commercial project on Horizon Ridge Parkway to be heard by the city council Tuesday.

The application of Sandy Ridge LLC, rejected by the city's Planning Commission in August, seeks to convert 11.3 acres of property zoned residential into a commercial center with retail, office and restaurant space.

Darek Dariusz bought the first home in his Sandy Ridge Avenue neighborhood in 1991. But even then he shied away from the large, vacant lots along the periphery, even though they are zoned residential.

"I kind of had a suspicion somebody would try to pull some stuff like this," Dariusz said.

The "stuff" he speaks off is the gradual transformation of Horizon Drive into a commercial corridor that leads residents to ask how much development is really needed to sustain their communities.

"We've all been trying to fight all this commercialism out here," Dariusz continued. "Because it wasn't developed to be commercialism. We wanted a nice Henderson atmosphere, rather than a Las Vegas atmosphere."
