East LV residents reiterate priorities to planners

Friday, Sept. 15, 2000 | 10:47 a.m.

East Las Vegas residents gathered Thursday night in a classroom at the Rafael Rivera Community Center to tell city planners about the needs of their part of the city.

As senior planner Tim Whitright went through a list of needs that had been brought up in previous community meetings, the 15 residents noted that most items on the list were still priorities for their community.

Roslyn Noisette pointed out the lack of affordable homes for larger families in her neighborhood. Al Gallego echoed her concern, saying, "Most of the housing in this area are two bedrooms, (there are) some three bedrooms and very few four bedroom."

The residents also expressed concerns about the lack of recreational opportunities for children in the area.

"We need more centers for the young children. We have a lot of kids" who use the available center, which can't accommodate all the local youth, Maria Roberts said.

Many in the group said they would like to see another community center built on the east side of town.

Additional community meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Howard Cannon Center, 340 North 11th St., and at 6 p.m. Thursday at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre, 947 West Lake Mead Blvd.
