Applicants sought for spot on bench
CARSON CITY -- Notices have been sent to 3,300 lawyers that applications are available to succeed the late District Judge Gary Redmond, who died last month in Las Vegas.
Lynda Dill, a management analyst in the state Administrative Office of the Court, said Wednesday the deadline for submitting applications is Oct. 16.
No date has been set for the state Judicial Selection Commission to interview the applicants and to recommend three to Gov. Kenny Guinn, who makes the final appointment.
Tourist wins $1.3 million
A $1.3 million jackpot was awarded at the Monte Carlo hotel-casino Wednesday.
The winner, a male tourist from the East Coast who requested anonymity, had been playing the resort's "Wheel of Fortune" slot machine when he won the money.
Delays predicted on thoroughfare
Road construction on Northshore Road between Callville Bay and the Redstone Picnic Area at Lake Mead National Recreation Area will cause delays for motorists. Work began Tuesday.
The project will remove the old road surface and replace it with wider lanes and shoulders in both directions. Nearly 430 cars a day travel along that stretch of Northshore, and drivers can expect delays of up to 15 minutes.
Members can get legal services
Members of the American Association of Retired Persons now have access to free and reduced-fee legal services.
Among the services AARP Legal Services Network offers are a free half-hour consultation, a 20 percent reduction off legal rates, low fixed rates for simple wills and powers of attorney.
There are 1,000 lawyers participating in 260 communities. Each one has been screened, interviewed and has completed a detailed application before entering the program.
To find a lawyer through the AARP, call 424-3410 or log on to arp.org/lsn.
