Reid asks Congress for cash to commemorate California Trail

The proposed interpretive center would recognize the more than 300,000 pioneers who traveled the California Trail across Nevada, Reid, D-Nev., told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

"These settlers often sacrificed their lives in search of the American dream, and left a pioneering mark on our American heritage," he said.

The project is a joint effort planned by the state of Nevada, the city of Elko, Elko County, the Bureau of Land Management and the advisory board to the National Historic California emigrant Trails Interpretive Center.
