Letter: Many careers undermine need for a diploma
Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000 | 10:08 a.m.
No need to spend more taxpayer money for unnecessary evaluations when the culprit has been here for years. It lies among our local working opportunities. Good career-paying jobs in Las Vegas don't necessarily mean white collar work or having that diploma. Students recognize this piece of paper is not a factor to work in most casinos, construction or some other businesses. Many of these jobs are paying excellent wages.
Policies on hiring must be changed by many establishments as to where you need that graduation diploma before being hired, or after being hired getting a G.E.D. during their six months probationary period. Otherwise, this situation will never be resolved.
Fast food businesses are not an issue needing these requirements since they are usually part-time, a before-graduation job or will probably not result in a long career. If all businesses cooperate, it's a good place to start and may lower our school dropout percentage.
