Full weekend of celebration planned

A drum and bugle band from Mexico will be among the entertainment at a civic ceremony that will celebrate Mexican Independence Day 2 p.m. Friday at Las Vegas City Hall.

The Mexican Patriotic Committee is hosting the ceremony, the first event of three days of celebration. A reception and dance following the ceremony will be held at the Showboat hotel-casino.

A parade will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fourth Street and Charleston Boulevard and will run north past Fremont Street. Also, a daylong family picnic will be held 10 a.m. Sunday at Freedom Park, on Pecos Road north of Bonanza Road.

UMC centers offer discount program

The American Cancer Society and University Medical Center's Primary Care Centers are providing men 50 and older with discount screenings for prostate cancer Monday through Sept. 21.

Call Paulette Salti at 798-6877 for the time and day of participating locations. A lecture on prostate cancer will be held on the same evening as the screening at the participating Primary Care Center.

Grand opening set at historic school

UNLV has begun offering a mix of academic and continuing education classes in downtown Las Vegas in a move designed to make the university more easily accessible to the public.

UNLV President Carol Harter and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman will preside over the grand opening of the UNLV Downtown Center at 3 p.m. Thursday at 400 Las Vegas Blvd. South, the historic Fifth Street School.

Lecture planned at state museum

The Archaeo-Nevada Society will meet 7 p.m. Thursday at the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society at Lorenzi Park.

Retired astronomer John Fountain of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, will speak on "Archaeoastronomy: More Than You Thought, Or Less."

It will be a joint meeting of the Southern Nevada Rock Art Enthusiasts and Archaeo-Nevada Society, and visitors are welcome at no charge.

Event scheduled at Clark County Library

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada will present Ruth Kaye's one-woman show, "My Grandmother, My Mother and Me," at 7 p.m. Monday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

Community fair

WestCare Youth and Family Services will host "Recovering Our Future: One Youth at a Time" at 1 p.m. Friday. Murals, booths, food and entertainment will be among activities at the event, to be held at WestCare, 401 S. Martin Luther King Blvd.
