Police seize weapons for destruction

Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000 | 10:58 a.m.

Nearly 200 guns and 150 knives with an estimated street value of more than $50,000 were confiscated from parole and probation offenders over a two-year period.

At one time, seized guns were auctioned off, but Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety Director Richard Kirkland said that is no longer allowed because the weapons would work their way back into the market.

The knives range from homemade machetes to Swiss army knives to Samurai swords.

While policy requires all the weapons to be destroyed, officers will contact the museum in Carson City to see if it's interested in taking the pre-Civil War pistol.

The seizure of an antique weapon is rare. The majority of guns seized are Saturday-night specials.
