Schumer tries to stop Trump casino plans for Manhattan

Monday, Sept. 11, 2000 | 9:44 a.m.

Schumer wrote a letter asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs to defuse any application billionaire developer Donald Trump may make to create a casino in New York City, since it could draw gamblers from a planned Catskills casino.

Trump said in Tuesday's New York Post that if state and federal officials approve a proposed Indian casino in Monticello, he will push for one on 100 acres (40 hectares) of undeveloped land he owns near the Hudson River.

"If there was casino gambling in Manhattan, Sullivan County would not do as well with it," Schumer said.

Gov. George Pataki said Tuesday he would be hesitant about such a project outside of the Catskills and in Niagara.

Trump could not be reached for comment Sunday.
