Human-caused blaze breaks out northwest of Winnemucca
Monday, Sept. 11, 2000 | 11:48 a.m.
The Mahogany Creek fire began Friday and expanded to cover 10,400 acres.
It's burning in grass, sage, aspen and mahogany about 75 miles northwest of Winnemucca. It's about 50 percent contained, but is only burning within its fire lines. Full containment is expected on Tuesday.
Eight crews, two helicopters and 10 engines are working the lines with about 240 people on hand.
The only other fire in the state, the 2,600-acre Phillips Ranch blaze 55 miles southeast of Ely has been burning for a month and a half and is being allowed to smolder until rain or snow extinguishes it. Three people are keeping an eye on it.
