Letter: Voucher system not a solution
Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000 | 2:31 a.m.
I have listened to Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush talk about revamping the public school system with his charter school voucher system. He claims that these schools will save all our children from being illiterate.
I must pose a series of questions. What if every child between the age of 6 and 18 asked for a voucher? Where are all the "charter schools" that will be prepared to accept them? Where would all the teachers and administrators come from to teach in and run those schools? Why would these "charter schools" necessarily be better for our children?
It seems to me that as when we studied the history of the United States, it was quite evident that one of the things that made this nation great was its "public school system." True, there are many problems in some of the schools today, but let us concentrate on identifying the problems and fixing them, not discarding the schools.
