Editorial: Disability access takes on priority
These changes are coming about primarily because of the difficulties that 12-year-old Stephen Quinn faced when he attended a UNLV men's basketball game last season. As the Sun first reported in February, arena employees prevented Quinn from going onto the floor level in his wheelchair even though he was with boosters who had nearby seats. In response, this season there will be nine wheelchair-accessible seats on the floor level. There also will be phones for the hearing impaired, lower concession and ticket windows, directional signs and plaza ramps. In addition, there will be 63 handicapped parking spaces just outside the ...
Clinton uses radio speech to press for $1.6 billion in recovery aid
NEW YORK - With more than 6.5 million acres of Western forests charred by wildfires, President Clinton pledged Saturday to seek nearly $1.6 billion from Congress to help hard-hit communities recover as the smoke clears and prevent future blazes.

Letter: Voucher system not a solution
I must pose a series of questions. What if every child between the age of 6 and 18 asked for a voucher? Where are all the "charter schools" that will be prepared to accept them? Where would all the teachers and administrators come from to teach in and run those schools? Why would these "charter schools" necessarily be better for our children?

Where I Stand -- Mike O'Callaghan: It's time to honor Cesar Chavez
HENDERSON, Nevada's second largest city, continues to expand and grow in numbers. It's a city that has gained national recognition for parks, recreation and a good environment for raising a family. As more streets and avenues are built, allow me to suggest one be named after a great American who did so much for the working families of our country.

Editorial: Impasse over aid is terrible
House and Senate negotiators, who are trying to work out differences on competing versions of a Department of Defense appropriations legislation, have been unable to agree on the Senate's plan to include this compensation for workers in that spending bill. The delay has been caused by objections from the House Judiciary Committee, whose members are worried that approving the package could result in costly lawsuits by workers and their families since the federal government would be admitting liability.
Letter: Tree harvesting worsens danger of wildfires
I agree with his statement, "Certainly cutting down the forests is not the way to save them." Timber harvesting opens up a forest, allowing more sunlight to penetrate to the forest floor causing the fine fuels, the needles, and small sticks to dry faster and stay dry longer. Wind is able to penetrate into an open forest. Being more directly affected by the wind, after a fire starts, it can sometimes spread faster and become bigger. Areas that are more highly roaded actually have a higher potential for catastrophic wildfires than the wilderness or large unroaded areas.
