Tourist killed, security guard wounded in Harrah’s shooting

Friday, Sept. 8, 2000 | 10:14 a.m.

A confrontation with security guards at a Las Vegas Strip casino has left a tourist dead and a security officer injured, Metro Police said.

A 29-year-old female tourist was killed by a stray bullet in Harrah's casino about 1:30 a.m. Friday by a man who was struggling with security guards, said Homicide Lt. Wayne Petersen.

Petersen said the victim was carrying California identification, but a friend indicated she was from Hawaii.

The man also shot a 43-year-old security officer in the stomach. The security officer is reported to be in stable condition at University Medical Center.

Petersen said Metro Police have arrested 32-year-old Stephen Mullen and 31-year-old Michael Frimmel. They are being held at the Clark County Detention Center on murder charges.

Harrah's security officers say they stopped the two men inside the casino for prior thefts. One of them pulled out a semiautomatic pistol and fired at least two shots after he was tackled by security.
