Four parks to get improvements
Four more parks in the mature part of North Las Vegas will see some new play equipment, grass, and other much-needed improvements.
On Wednesday the City Council allocated $130,626 to renovate Hartke Park, Joe Kneip Park, Petitti Park and Walker Memorial Park. Improvements include restroom modifications, concrete walkways, lighting, landscaping, play equipment, picnic tables and shelters.
It is expected to take six months to complete the design phase.
Last month, the council allocated $74,420 to fix up four other parks -- College Park, Herbert Memorial Park, Tom Williams School Park and Windsor Park.
City Council sets public hearing
The City Council has set a public hearing Sept. 20 for an application to change zoning at the Craig Road Ranch Golf Course to commercial, setting the wheels in motion for a planned casino on the property.
Although the application only regards a zoning change, the land owner, Stimson Enterprises Inc., has said the company will eventually apply for a gaming permit and transfer the land to Station Casinos Inc., which plans to develop the land for a major casino.
Landscaping to be required
The City Council has introduced a new ordinance that will require additional landscaping on wide, right-of-way streets.
The proposed ordinance would require 5 feet of landscaping between the sidewalks and perimeter walls along local residential streets.
In May, during a joint planning session with the Planning Commission and City Council, the members drafted the ordinance to help improve the appearance of the internal streets in subdivisions.
During the work session, staff members passed around pictures of local streets where there were almost no front yards or perimeter landscaping for a distance of several hundred feet.
The council will vote on the ordinance Sept. 20.
