More Las Vegas television stations putting newscasts on the Internet
Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000 | 10:49 a.m.
Two daily newscasts produced by KTNV Channel 13 of Las Vegas are being broadcast over the Internet under an agreement signed by station officials with BroadcastAMERICA.com.
The local ABC network affiliate will join other Las Vegas stations that are producing "streaming video," which enables viewers to watch live and archived programming on their computers.
Kristine Foate, vice president and general manager of the station, said Channel 13 will offer its 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. newscasts to viewers who log on to www.yourinsidelasvegas.com, as well as a selection of archived webcasts.
Foate said the agreement with BroadcastAMERICA.com is a partnership that provides content for the website and a new means to reach the audience for the station.
Channel 13 joins four other local stations that have used streaming video to put their programming on the Internet.
KLAS Channel 8, the CBS network affiliate in Las Vegas, has streamed all of its broadcasts for about four years, said Amy Heath, interactive manager. The station also streamed the Ted Binion murder trial to viewers and has an archive of implosion videos and other footage of local interest.
Las Vegas One, a channel operated by a partnership of Channel 8, the Las Vegas Sun and Cox Communications, the dominant cable TV provider in Las Vegas, plans to offer streamed video of its newscasts within a year.
KVBC Channel 3, Las Vegas' NBC network affiliate, also used the technology to broadcast the Binion trial. Gina Riggi, webmaster for the station, said Channel 3 discontinued streaming regular broadcasts, but will start up again before the end of the year using new digital cameral equipment.
KVVU Channel 5, the Fox network affiliate in Las Vegas, streams individual stories on the Internet through VideoNEWS Plus. April Mastroluca, news assistant at KVVU, said the station places up to five stories a day on the Internet.
And, KLVX Channel 10 offers its "Nevada Week in Review" current events show and special programs like political debates on the Internet. Lee Winston, director of production operations for PBS affiliate in Las Vegas, said the station is looking at using the technology to offer educational courses through the Clark County School District and the Community College of Southern Nevada via the Internet.
