Letter: Community put smiles on many children’s faces
Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000 | 9:42 a.m.
On Saturday, Aug. 19, with the help of community volunteers, Catholic Charities was able to fulfill its promise to hundreds of homeless and needy children and provide free shoes, clothing, backpacks, school supplies and lots of smiles. I wish you could have seen their faces. Their joy and delight was possible because of the compassion in our community.
Our plea for help was answered tenfold. We especially want to thank newspapers, radio and television for their immediate response and publicizing our need to replace the shoes and clothing.
Many individuals and groups called to help. Small children brought money from their own savings accounts to help. Local businesses also opened their hearts and supplied us with shoes, clothing and school supplies. Everything that was missing, and then some, was replaced.
Our sincere thanks go to everyone who helped make our back-to-school event a tremendous success.
