Panel focuses on small-town character

Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 | 10:04 a.m.

Boulder City should maintain its small-town character, limit the size of commercial developments and start planning for future possible reductions in revenue.

That is the advice that the City Council-appointed Strategic Planning Committee delivered to the council at a special meeting Tuesday night.

Intended to guide city policy over the next five years, the committee's draft strategic plan outlines nine goals aimed at protecting the town's quality of life.

"It's not something written in concrete," City Manager John Sullard said of the plan. "It can change as circumstances change."

The committee's concerns over future revenue losses may be addressed by the city through land sales or leases, raising of property taxes or cuts in city services, Sullard said.

"The community of Boulder City is committed to preserving its small town charm, historic heritage, and unique identity while proactively addressing our needs and enhancing our quality of life," the vision statement reads.

A community meeting on Sept. 21 will allow Boulder City residents to insert their concerns into the plan.

The council also approved Rathert International Golf Design as the architect for the city's proposed second municipal golf course. The course is expected to contain 27 holes and host future residential development.
