West Virginia gambling opponents ask elected officials, candidates for support

Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000 | 10:18 a.m.

The group is preparing to kick off an anti-casino campaign at a gospel music festival Sept. 16 and has invited all area candidates and elected officials to attend.

"We understand that some of our elected officials and candidates are being pressured to stay out of the referendum issue," said Alan Schoolcraft-Williams, the political action chairman for West Virginia Families Against Casino Gambling.

The group is hoping to defeat a measure on the Nov. 7 general election ballot that would allow The Greenbrier to operate a casino.

"We appreciate that it may be difficult to stand up against the county's largest employer, but we are going to go the extra mile for those elected officials who stand with us publicly, Schoolcraft-Williams said.

Officials at The Greenbrier, which is owned by CSX Corp., have said that the casino is needed to lure customers during the winter when business falls. Only people staying at the resort would be allowed to gamble.
