LAS VEGAS - State Sen. Jon Porter easily won the Republican congressional primary Tuesday, setting up a November showdown with incumbent Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley.
In Nevada's other congressional primary, two-term incumbent Jim Gibbons also coasted to victory.
Porter was challenged by Las Vegas schoolteacher Jim Blockey and Nancy Price, a former university regent.
With 9 percent of precincts reporting, Porter had 63 percent or 9,209 votes. Price, who raised essentially no money, had 22 percent or 3,206 votes. Blockey had 15 percent or 2,251 votes.
Porter rated his chances against Berkley in the general election high.
"She's considered one of the weakest incumbents in the country. I am excited and anticipating a win in November," Porter said.
In the 2nd District GOP primary, Gibbons faced token opposition from Las Vegas claims adjustor Mitchell Tracy. With 40 percent of precincts reporting, Gibbons had 89 percent, or 35,020 votes. Tracy had 11 percent or 4,116.
Gibbons will face Reno schoolteacher Tierney Cahill, who ran unopposed in the primary.
