Emergency roundup of wild horses planned

BLM officials said they have counted about 327 of the animals in the Sand Springs East Herd Management Area, which includes lands managed by the Ely field office.
They said there would be about 125 to 150 wild horses in the area after the roundup, which is scheduled to take place this week.
"Range specialists feel current water and forage can sustain this number and that the herd will continue to be viable," BLM spokeswoman Susan Howle said.
"The gather is necessary to prevent resource degradation and to bring the wild horse population into balance with the limited forage and water currently being produced."
It's the sixth such emergency roundup being undertaken in Nevada due to a severe drought in portions of the state.
Animals will be taken to and prepared for adoption at the BLM's Palomino Valley corrals northeast of Reno.
