County yanks ski resort’s permit for two new lifts

Monday, Sept. 4, 2000 | 9:47 a.m.

The Lake Tahoe resort is accused of obtaining the permit through misrepresentation.

"The county has since learned that (Squaw) has considerably expanded the project, without prior approval, and failed to adhere to the conditions of project approval," a commission document alleges.

The changes "have caused substantial erosion and sediment runoff, and have led to violations of water quality objectives in Squaw Creek," a Truckee River tributary, the document adds.

Under the action, the lifts may have to be torn down if the resort fails to complete an environmental impact review before February.

Until a new conditional use permit is approved by the county, Squaw can no longer operate or upgrade the lifts.

Last year, Squaw combined four older lifts into two newer, faster lifts.

In June, Environmental Protection Agency agents raided the resort's business offices as part of an agency investigation into the resort's alleged environmental violations.
