Letter: Officials could do more to clean up roads
Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000 | 3:44 a.m.
The city, county and state officials have the means to keep the roadway and ditches free of trash. They could enforce the laws on littering and have a patrolman or other paid officials issue tickets to offending vehicles: trucks, autos, buses, trash haulers, etc. Where do the covers on loads disappear? We have laws for this infraction.
Increasing the fine amounts assessed to violators would be a deterrent. Also, collect money for the extra cost of monitoring the roads, i.e., the road to Apex particularly.
Some states even assess penalty points on a driver's license for infractions -- it is a moving violation.
Rather than moan and groan about bad conditions, our leaders need to make a positive action.
