Joe Delaney remembers 1958: Carol Channing at the Tropicana
Friday, Sept. 1, 2000 | 9:43 a.m.
Carol Channing's 1958 Tropicana act was a reprise of hits from earlier Broadway musicals including "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend," her career signature song from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Her biggest Broadway musical was "Hello, Dolly" in the 1960s. Tommy Noonan and Peter Marshall were a comedy team, predecessors here to Rowan and Martin. Elaine Dunn was also from Broadway and later opened for Andy Williams when he opened the Caesars Palace Circus Maximus in 1966. George Tapps was the Tommy Tune of the 1950s. Nat Brandwynne's Orchestra opened with Williams and Dunn at Caesars.
