Labor Day has been observed since the 1840s, when the Knights of Labor began holding a September parade in New York City. In 1894 Congress declared the first Monday in September as the legal holiday of Labor Day. Canada also observes the same holiday in honor of wage earners. Here's what's open and closed on Monday:
