CARSON CITY -- In a rare case, the state Board of Education is holding a special meeting Friday to consider the appeal of parents who are protesting the closure of a school for kindergarten students in Ely.
The White Pine School Board voted to shut down the Murry Street Elementary School to save money and to transfer the youngsters to the Norman Elementary School.
Keith Rheault, deputy state superintendent of public instruction, said this is the first case in at least in the last 25 years in which a district has closed a school and an appeal by parents has been lodged. He said there has been about 30 letters received by the state board from parents who don't believe this is a money-saving decision.
The school has already been closed and the furniture moved.
