Nevada Day’s sparkle dulled by weather

Monday, Oct. 30, 2000 | 3:59 a.m.

Organizers had hoped for a turnout of 30,000-40,000, but police estimated the crowd at less than 10,000.

Spectators bundled up in jackets to watch the 2 1/2 -hour parade, which drew many of the state's top elected officials and political candidates.

Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., who's stepping down in January after two terms, served as parade grand marshal. He threw his 19th annual chili feed afterward.

In past years, Nevada Day was often celebrated in the middle of the week since it always falls on Oct. 31.

But beginning this year, the holiday will be officially celebrated on Friday, with the parade always falling on Saturday.

Nevada celebrates its 136th birthday this year.
