Letter: Apply rules of fairness to political issues
Monday, Oct. 30, 2000 | 9:25 a.m.
Death penalty -- if applied to the rich and privileged as well as the poor and powerless. In my entire lifetime of 70 years, I cannot recall anyone of means or power ever getting the death penalty in a capital crime.
Be tough on crime -- if it were also equally tough on corporate polluters, price fixers, and the health care participants in Medicare fraud.
Abortion -- make it illegal and support any appropriate penalty so long as it were applied equally to the debutantes and their society doctors.
Drug testing -- I stand ready to submit to mandatory drug testing so long as the CEOs and all the others of rank and privilege will take the same test and suffer the same consequences.
Military action -- I would send my son off to fight as I did, so long as those of influence send their sons to fight by his side.
Taxes -- I would pay them as I have, but without complaint if those of wealth would pay their fair share.
The ideological issues that divide us could be bridged to a stronger and united America if the rule of fairness were applied to one and all.
