Scattered showers forecast for weekend

Friday, Oct. 27, 2000 | 10:34 a.m.

Las Vegans who had hoped the rain earlier in the week was just a temporary change in the weather woke up to overcast skies and light rain this morning.

The National Weather Service forecast includes scattered showers for the rest of the day and clouds over the weekend with a chance of rain on Sunday afternoon.

High temperatures today are expected to be in the low to mid 60's and stay that way through the weekend.

The sun is expected to return on Tuesday with low temperatures in the range of 45 to 50 degrees and with highs in the 60's.

The weather change came Thursday afternoon as a strong low pressure system moved in from off the California coast. Las Vegas is getting moisture out of the head of the system, which is typical, John Adair of the the weather service said.

The valley started getting rain from the system around midnight Thursday.

Because the rain has been slow and steady rather than a downpour, no local flooding is expected, Adair said.

This front will be moving out of the area today, but it will be followed by another one dropping out of the Gulf of Alaska. Winds will increase on Sunday with the new front coming in as well as a possibility of rain early in the week.

Mount Charleston had 2 inches of snow on the ground this morning, and it was still snowing at presstime.

Las Vegas has received between a quarter-inch and a half-inch of rain in the past week.
