April 22: Artificial Heart in Human
Story: Dr. Michael Debakey yesterday successfully implanted an artificial heart in a 65-year-old coal miner near death and gave him a chance for life in a medical triumph.
June 6: Surveyor's Camera Sees Moon Mountains
Story: Pictures taken by America's Surveyor moon craft yesterday revealed the crest of a small mountain range rising about 500 feet above the lunar horizon.
Aug. 5: Opening Tonight of Caesars Palace
Story: It's party time tonight in the best Roman tradition when the massive $25 million Caesars Palace, the newest hotel on the Strip, throws wide its doors for its grand opening celebration.
Flanked by imported Romanesque statuary, fountains and Italian cypress trees, 2,000 invited "patricians" and as many "plebians" as can squeeze inside will cross the marble-studded threshold of the Palace.
Aug. 17: Quake Jolts Las Vegas, Most of Nevada
Story: The largest earthquake recorded in Nevada this year rocked the state for 20 seconds yesterday morning but apparently caused no major damage.
Most seismograph readings pegged the quake right at 6 on the Richter scale. The disastrous Alaska quake in 1964 had a Richter reading of 8.25.
Dec. 16: Walt Disney Dead
Story: Walt Disney, the greatest showman since P.T. Barnum, died yesterday of acute circulatory failure. The 65-year-old entrepreneur left as his legacy to the world Disneyland, fabulous cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and universally acclaimed motion pictures.
