Extra taxis approved for convention
Friday, Oct. 27, 2000 | 11:02 a.m.
Southern Nevada's 13 taxi companies will be allowed to use every cab in their fleets -- more than 300 vehicles in addition to the 1,500 currently operating -- for the Comdex trade show next month.
The Taxicab Authority of Nevada approved the issuance of additional temporary medallions for the show, which annually draws more than 200,000 people to the city. This year's show will run Nov. 12-17.
The regulatory body that monitors taxi operations in Clark County approved 23 additional cabs per company on Nov. 12 from noon to midnight and 15 additional cabs per company on Nov. 17, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Between Nov. 13-16, when the show is at its peak, companies will be able to operate every cab available from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., each day.
The largest fleets are operated by Checker Cab and Yellow Cab, which each have 174 cabs authorized, while Whittlesea Cab operates 165 vehicles.
