Letter: Strict control of guns needed
Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000 | 9:38 a.m.
If a criminal with a gun comes to attack a victim for revenge, robbery or sex, there is a great chance of the victim being killed by the criminal before the victim gets a chance to use his/her gun. The attacker could kill the victim (as a precaution against the attacker being killed) if the attacker knows the victim has a gun.
Possession of guns is especially dangerous during quarrels between couples if one or both are short-tempered. Even with great precaution there is a good chance of children getting a gun and misusing it, especially if there is a gun in the house. It is reported each year about 1,500 U.S. children 14 and younger are hurt in gun accidents. If guns are not strictly restricted there is great possibility of youngsters possessing and using them, as happened in Columbine and other schools.
Guns are most dangerous, as we all know, when they are in the possession of gangsters, drug users, drunkards and those with psychological problems. Of all other people, law enforcement officers are in much greater danger than others. I pray for them and their families.
