Spoiled cans of fruit recalled

The Clark County Health District has issued a countywide recall on large cans of Libby's natural lite fruit mix in pear juice.
The cans were recalled because of damage to the bottom seal, Chief Health Officer Dr. Donald Kwalick said. No. 10 cans with the number "MF89P E821B" on the bottom center indicated two nicks or cuts to the seal about 4 inches apart.
Up to four cans out of 40 cases per shipping pallett had the defects. The Food and Drug Administration took samples from defective cans for testing.
Clark County School District food services employees noticed cans that bulged, hissed and popped open in shipping cartons. The liquid was cloudy, indicating spoilage, rather than poison from botulism or other toxic substances, Health District Environmental Health Supervisor Paul Klouse said.
The cans are normally used in institutional settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools and prisons, Klouse said.
Anyone who finds the cans matching the number and the defects should call the Health District's Environmental Health Division at 383-1263 or return them to the store or supplier where purchased.
