Guinn calls on influence to increase Republican vote

Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 | 5:05 a.m.

Gov. Kenny Guinn is using his clout to help get fellow Republicans to the polls.

Democratic Sens. Harry Reid and Richard Bryan are doing the same with Democrats.

The Nevada Republican Party mailed out 285,000 mailers including a letter from Guinn suggesting Republicans ask for an absentee ballot and then vote the GOP ticket. The mailer includes a pre-addressed postcard to the county registrar. All people have to do is sign it and drop it in the mail.

Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said there are three absentee ballot request efforts under way, and they are working.

Lomax predicted the efforts will drive mail-in voter results up from the 54,000 requests in 1998 to close to 70,000 requests this year.
