Teen who scuffled with deputy arrested

Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 | 9:57 a.m.

Saul Ringo Alvarez, 18, was arrested around 6 p.m. Thursday after a manhunt that began shortly after sunrise and included more than 40 law enforcement officers who used dogs and a helicopter to track him.

The incident began shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday when the deputy saw the teen walking along U.S. 395 south of Reno wearing only blue jeans and a T-shirt.

Because of the time and chilly temperatures, the deputy stopped to see if he needed help and offered him a ride to town.

But the deputy found a gun on Alvarez as he was searching him before allowing him into his patrol car.

The two struggled and the deputy managed to take the gun away before the teen fled.

Authorities believe he hid in the brush overnight. A motorcycle patrolman spotted him late in the afternoon. Alvarez ran and eluded officers by hiding in a field of tall grass before giving up.

"It was a big area we were searching and we finally found him lying down in the field," Washoe County Sheriff Sgt. Mike Vorderburggen said. "He was pretty tired from running and gave up without a fight."
