A 66-year-old North Las Vegas man was shot to death Thursday when he stepped outside his house after hearing gunshots.
Charles E. Shannon was hit by gunshots fired by two men on bicycles chasing a another man running down the 2700 block of Carroll Street Thursday about noon, Lt. Art Redcay, North Las Vegas Police spokesman, said.
Several residents told police they heard shots and went into their front yards to see what was happening. Police suspect Shannon went to the sidewalk and into the line of fire of the two men on bicycles.
Shannon was shot in the back. He was taken to Lake Mead Hospital, where he died, police said.
Police believe the man who was fleeing from the two gunmen jumped over a fence into the yard just north of Shannon's house and continued running. The two gunmen fired several shots at him.
The fleeing man ran past the wounded Shannon, followed by the two men on bicycles. Shannon was not believed to be the intended target of the gunmen, police said.
The gunmen were not apprehended as of this morning and the fleeing man has not been located, police said.
Anyone with information in this case is asked to call North Las Vegas Police at 633-9111 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
